A Thousand Smiles
(Written in 2017) A Thousand Smiles was shot over 7 days in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Thailand. I was originally going to make photographs but I didn't think that was good enough anymore and I wanted to personally push myself in style coming off a previous feature documentary.
I wanted to expand away from photography, as well as distill documentary down to its essential elements. I've attempted that in A Thousand Smiles. I asked myself a basic question, "Can we still captivate through pure imagery, limited dialogue, and the soundtrack of daily life?"
This film is a meditation on the beauty and humor and chaos of life in and around Thailand, as well as an experiment to go back to the basics of documentary filmmaking.
